It’s too early to think about 2008, of course

but I keep thinking about that year when I look at the results tonight from Iowa and Minnesota. These are supposed to be purple states, but Republican Congressman Jim Nussle is getting killed in the Iowa governor race, Republican Mark Kennedy (an attractive candidate) never was close in the Minnesota Senate race, and Republican Gov. Tim Pawlenty is trailing in Minnesota as well.
Why? John and Scott may have to correct me, but I think it’s the war big-time. Iowa and Minnesota are traditionally anti-war states (Michael Lind has written about this), and I doubt that either one will get back to purple in 2008 unless things change dramatically in Iraq.
