In three books over the past eight years, Cornell University Professor Jeremy Rabkin has argued the case for the importance of national sovereignty. With Why Sovereignty Matters in 1998, The Case for Sovereignty in 2004 (NRO interview here), and Law Without Nations? in 2005, Professor Rabkin’s argument has only become more compelling over time.
In the January 2007 issue of the New Criterion, the magazine continues its twenty-fifth anniversary celebration with a package of articles on the theme of sovereignty. In the two essays that the magazine has made available for nonsubscribers, Rabkin’s themes loom large. Roger Kimball introduces the essays with a nod to Rabkin’s work. Then Andrew McCarthy powerfully demonstrates how the United States Supreme Court has itself taken up the assault on sovereignty, and intimates what that development may portend for our future.
