The Marxist-Islamist entente

During the Reagan administration the Communist beachhead in Central America was treated as a matter of primary importance. Facing down the Soviet challenge in our owh hemisphere was a project with deep historic and strategic roots. The weird alliance between Iran and Venezuela and now between Iran and Nicaragua recalls an important chapter in the Cold War. We nevertheless seem to confront it bereft of an appropriate doctrine to help us articulate our goals let alone direct our action. Today’s New York Sun carries an editorial that should serve as some kind of a wake up call to those of us concerned about the extension of the regioinal war we face in the Middle East to our own neighborhood.
