Better news for McCain

Yesterday, I noted a Los Angeles Times poll in which John McCain had dropped to third place among likely Republican primary voters, behind Rudy Giuliani and Fred Thompson. However, today a poll by the American Research Group of Republicans who say they will definitely participate in their primary or caucus has McCain firmly in second place. 23 percent of such individuals favor McCain compared to 27 percent for Giuliani. Romney is next with 12 percent, followed by Gingrich at 10 percent and Fred Thompson at 9 percent. Last month Rudy led McCain by 34 percent to 30 percent, so both appear to have lost support, as Republicans (I suspect) continue to look for a more thoroughly conservative option.
On the Democratic side, Hillary Clinton (37 percent)leads Obama (22 percent) and Edwards (19 percent).
The poll also contains interesting data on an array of issues.
