May madness

The NCAA has set the brackets for its men’s lacrosse championship tournament. Duke is the number one seed. That’s a surprise because Cornell finished the season undefeated and ranked number one. Moreover, they defeated Duke in Durham. However, Cornell played only two teams ranked in the top 10, whereas Duke played eight and lost only one of those matches.
Duke will play Providence in the first round and then (barring a monumental upset) gets the winner of the Navy-North Carolina game.
Cornell is seeded fourth, setting up a possible rematch with Duke in the semifinals. Virginia and Johns Hopkins are the top two teams on the other side of the bracket.
Play begins this weekend. The final four will take place on Memorial Day weekend in Baltimore.
