Immigration Bill Hangs in the Balance

The fate of the Senate’s comprehensive immigration bill is up in the air, following a 49-48 vote late last night to terminate the guest worker program after five years. Just a few minutes ago, what appears to have been a cloture vote failed spectacularly, with only 33 votes in favor. Republicans apparently opposed cloture almost unanimously, in order to preserve further opportunities for conservative-leaning amendments. Such amendments, of course, may bring the coalition that supports the bill crashing down.
