Not So Hot

Another embarrassment for anthropogenic global warming advocates: their favorite source of statistics, NASA/Goddard’s GISS, used software that had an undetected year 2000 bug. As a result, it has been kicking out global temperature statistics that are too high. They’ve now been revised downward, so that 1998 is no longer the warmest year on record.
That’s not especially shocking; science proceeds by trial and error, and correcting errors is a common path toward progress. What is disheartening is that in the field of climate science–a science in its infancy, with almost nothing that is known for certain–this sort of critique is discouraged and often made impossible, since:

Government scientists using taxpayer money to develop the GISS temperature data base at taxpayer expense refuse to publicly release their temperature adjustment algorithms or software (In much the same way Michael Mann refused to release the details for scrutiny of his methodology behind the hockey stick).
