Hope Springs Eternal

The opening line of this report of a speech by Terry Waite is beyond parody:

Former Middle East hostage Terry Waite has called for dialogue with al-Qaida, saying the organization had moderate elements that could be engaged constructively.

Like so many things, the definition of “moderate” keeps slipping. While Waite obviously doesn’t speak for American liberals, his comments illustrate the extent to which liberals, here and abroad, tend to substitute wishful thinking for policy.
