The intellectual collapse of the Democratic Party

University of Virginia Professor James Ceaser has the must-read cover story of the Weekly Standard’s new issue: “The stupid party.” Professor Ceaser concludes:

The Democratic party, its prowess renewed by a taste of success in 2006, is riding the crest of a political wave. It is the stupid party triumphant. What serious Democrats must now consider is whether to accept this state of affairs–or begin to think deeply enough to find a principled ground for rejecting a faction in their midst that is not only stupid but dangerous as well.

The leftist insurgent faction to which Professor Ceaser refers includes “the progressive coalition of billionaires and bloggers” and the faux Internet-reliant grassroots organizations such as MoveOn and ACORN. Professor Ceaser shows them to be the descendant of the 1960’s New Left. His article gives little ground for an optimistic answer to the question he leaves hanging in his conclusion.
