When Bill Clinton came to town to raise money for Ms. Hillary this past Tuesday, he spoke to a crowd of 2,000 at the State Theater in downtown Minneapolis. We were across the street at the Pantages Theater enjoying Bill Kristol’s brilliant presentatation on “The New World” at the Center of the American Experiment’s Fall Briefing. I can’t compare the events other than to say that the audience for Bill Kristol’s talk showed no sign of nuttiness, while the Democratic crowd across the street had a crew of truthers who justly elicited Clinton’s “How dare you?”
In his account of Clinton’s talk in Minneapolis, the Star Tribune’s Bob Von Sternberg quotes Clinton providing slightly modulated praise of Ms. Hillary:
“In the 40 years I’ve been voting, Hillary is, by a long stretch, the best qualified, nonincumbent we’ve ever had a chance to vote for, and that includes 1992,” said the former president in reference to the year when he won election to the White House.
She may be more qualified than George McGovern, Jimmy Carter, Michael Dukakis, Bill Clinton and John Kerry. But wouldn’t a Minnesota crowd think that Hubert Humphrey and Walter Mondale had at least a slght edge on Ms. Hillary in terms of qualifications?
