Democrats continue to gain in Virginia

Yesterday, Virginia held its state assembly election, with all seats in play. The Democrats picked up at least the four Senate seats they needed to gain control of that chamber. They also reduced the Republican majority in the House.
The Dems obtained their majority in the Senate in part by picking up seats in liberal Northern Virginia, but they also picked up two seats in the Hampton Roads area. One of the defeated Republican incumbents in Northern VIriginia is Jeannemarie Devolities Davis, the wife of Republican Congressman Tom Davis.
The Republicans hoped that the illegal immigration issue would be winner for them. It didn’t turn out that way. However, based on the ads that were running in the Washington D.C. media market, it’s fair to say that the Democrats neutralized the issue by taking (or appearing to take) basically the same tough stance as the Republicans.
