Another silly season non-story, Part Two

Barack Obama has commented about Hillary Clinton’s reference to Robert Kennedy’s assassination. Obama stated:

I have learned that when you are campaigning for as many months as Senator Clinton and I have been campaigning, sometimes you get careless in terms of the statements that you make, and I think that is what happened here.

Obama is clearly correct that Clinton did not mention the RFK assassination in an attempt to play to fears that Obama might be assassinated or for any other nefarious reason. As I explained here, it is obvious to anyone with basic analytical skills and a modicum of objectivity that Clinton was merely recalling past nomination battles that continued into June, and in doing so carelessly mentioned the tragic signature event of the June 1968 Democratic campaign.

Having essentially locked up the nomination, Obama can afford to be gracious. Indeed, he has every incentive not to take this cheap of a shot against his rival. Moreover, the Clinton camp may have a point when it complains that Obama’s campaign helped fueled Friday’s media feeding frenzy on this matter by responding to Clinton’s comment rather less graciously than the candidate later did.

Nonetheless, Obama’s statement confirms that this really is much ado about nothing. And it highlights the buffoonery displayed by leftist partisans such as former sports highlights presenter Keith Olbermann, who lack both objectivity and analytical skills, when they go ballistic over Clinton’s unhappily-phrased remark.
