Courting Latinos

Like Barack Obama, John McCain has a new ad out. This one, on McCain’s support for the Colombia free trade agreement, targets Latino voters. It’s probably pretty effective; note the Spanish subtitles. McCain says we can’t renege on the free trade agreements we’ve negotiated, and that we need to create jobs on both sides of the border. The ad doesn’t say anything about the specifics of the Colombia agreement, or why Democrats’ opposition to the agreement will only hurt American workers.

Many on the right will never forgive McCain for his position on immigration, but he may as well get some benefit out of it with Latin voters. Emphasizing free trade, an issue on which he disagrees with Obama, rather than re-opening the immigration debate, is no doubt a smart way to do it.
