The Latest From Georgia

Russia has agreed to a cease-fire in Georgia, under which Russian and Georgian forces will withdraw to their “pre-conflict positions.” Reports vary as to whether firing has actually stopped. It is too early to speculate as to whether Russia called off its invasion in response to (unknown) Western pressure, or whether its leaders concluded, as Dmitry Medvedev said, that Russia’s “aim has been achieved.”

I’m afraid Russia may well have succeeded in demonstrating not only to Georgia but to Azerbaijain and other countries in the region that they have no effective defense against Russian military power.
