Barack Obama has been an unimpressive Presidential candidate in every respect but one: he attracts cash like no politician in American history. In July, Obama raised another $51 million, vastly exceeding John McCain’s $27 million. It is fair to say that if the Presidency can be bought by an unqualified candidate, Obama will buy it.
Still, I’m not overly concerned by Obama’s cash haul. It’s a given that the Democrats have more money than the Republicans in virtually every seriously contested election. The real question is whether McCain has enough money to get his message out and be competitive. Between his own fundraising, the RNC’s contributions and the federal money he will get after the convention, McCain should have the resources he needs to run a competitive race.
