John has already blown the whistle on the Washington Post’s front-page story called “Palin Links Iraq to Sept. 11 In Talk to Troops in Alaska.” But the Post ran a second, equally ridiculous, anti-McCain ticket hit piece on its front-page today. It’s called “A Tangled Story of Addiction: Consequences of Cindy McCain’s Drug Abuse Were More Complex Than She Has Portrayed.”
Cindy McCain’s use of pain killers in the very early 1990s, following back surgery and two ruptured discks, is an old story with no relevance to the question of whether John McCain should be elected president. Moreover, she has been open about her addiction. Why she should discuss the consequences of the addiction in all their “complexity” — e.g., what happened to the doctor who supplied her with the pain killers — is not clear. The relevance of her “failure” to do so is even less apparent.
Much of what’s taking place in this campaign on both sides is disheartening, and nowhere is this more true than in the news pages of the Washington Post.
The good news is that the Post has only so many spots on its front-page to devote to attacking the Republican ticket and its members’ spouses. If the best it can do is stories about Cindy McCain’s drug addiction in 1991, the Republicans have nothing to fear. The bad news is that if this is the best the MSM can do with the facts, it may resort (as it already has on occasion) to making them up.
