Bam’s bombin’ buddy: Whodat???

When John Updike’s literary alter ego Henry Bech wins the Nobel Prize for Literature in the story “Bech and the Bounty of Sweden,” Updike posits the headline reporting the news in the New York Daily News: “BECH? WHODAT???” By the same token, Barack Obama’s description of his relationship with his Chicago associate Bill Ayers has evolved from “certainly friendly” to “WHODAT???”

Once upon a time, Obama campaign strategist David Axelrod acknowledged that Ayers and Obama were “certainly friendly[.]” As the New York Post reports, however, yesterday Axelrod was peddling the latest Obama campaign spin on the relationship: Obama had been unfamiliar with Ayers’s terrorist past as recently as 1995. “There’s no evidence that they’re close,” Axelrod added.

So when did Obama learn that Ayers participated in the bombings of New York City Police Headquarters in 1970, of the Capitol building in 1971 and the Pentagon in 1972? That he had spent the 1970’s as a fugitive from justice? That he now considers his bombing campaign an educational activity?
