Good news from Kentucky

Fox News has declared Mitch McConnell the winner in Kentucky. I thought this race was a pretty sure thing, but it seems to have been fairly close in the end.

This is good news. For McConnell wil be a key figure, especially if Barack Obama is elected. But even he won’t be able to weave much magic unless the Republican Senate count is at least in the low 40s. And, again according to Fox, the GOP will have to get there without Elizabeth Dole.

The good news (if you can call it that) is that Republican can get to 42 or better without Dole, if other races go as many expect them to.

UPDATE: Saxby Chambliss apparently will be re-elected without the need for a run-off. That’s a major blow to Democratic hopes of getting to 60 Senate seats.
