What a long strange trip it’s been

Whatever the final outcome — which will give us either our first African-American president and a true phenom or an enormous upset victory — this past 18 months have produced a presidential campaign for the ages. From a selfish point of view, It’s been a delight to have been able to write about (and in some cases meet) this cast of vivid, sometimes stranger than fiction, characters: Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, John Edwards, Joe Biden, Bill Richardson, John McCain, Sarah Palin, Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee, Rudy Giuliani, Fred Thompson, and Ron Paul.

It probably speaks poorly of me, but my favorite writing has been about Obama and Huckabee, about whom my views were almost exclusively negative. But McCain and Palin weren’t too far behind, and my comments about them were mixed and in McCain’s case more positive than negative.

If Obama wins tonight, it may not be long before I’m writing about Huckabee and Palin again. And Mitt Romney too.
