On to Wembley

Everton advanced to the semi-finals of the FA Cup competition, and a date with Manchester United at fabled Wembley Stadium. The Wembley appearance will be our first since 1995, when we defeated Man U to win the Cup.

Everton moved on by a virtue of a 2-1 victory over Middlesbrough. We conceded a goal just before half time. But, sparked by the insertion of Louis Saha, scored two early in the second half — the first by “Mo” Fellaini and the second by Saha himself. Boro rarely threatened after that.

If we reach the finals, we will almost certainly face Chelsea or Arsenal. By contrast, last year, admittedly an exceptional one, Portsmouth was the only Premiership team to make the semis. The upshot is that, if we win the Cup, we will have defeated four of the top five teams in England (we’re number six).

With our thin squad and all of the injuries, this will be quite a challenge.
