Vote For Your Favorite Artists

Maybe not your very favorite artists, since the London Times’ poll only covers the 20th century. Still, there are a lot of fun choices, and a few odd ones (Leni Riefenstahl?), The Times has selected 200 artists for its poll; you can vote for as many as you want, but only once. Voting closes on May 2 and the rankings will be announced on May 25. As internet polls go, this is a pretty entertaining one.

I voted for 10 or 12 artists, among them Jackson Pollock. Which reminds me that one of my favorite biographies is of Pollock, by Steven Naifeh and Gregory Smith. The sprawling narrative is as much a work of American history as of biography, and the Prologue, a wonderful piece of writing about the genesis of one of Pollock’s masterpieces, is worth the price of the book.

Anyway, if you’re at all interested in art, the Times’ poll is worth checking out.
