Bush Speaks, Maybe

Matt Latimer, a minor speechwriter in the latter stages of the Bush administration, is trying to cash in on his time in the White House with a new book titled Speech-less. It isn’t out yet, but the first installment has appeared in GQ. I have no idea whether the book is any good, and it has already been ripped by Dana Perino, among others. But the GQ excerpt purports to quote Bush on some of the principals in the 2008 campaign; the quotes, as Latimer renders them, have the ring of truth. If President Bush didn’t say them, he should have. Of Barack Obama:

This is a dangerous world, and this cat isn’t remotely qualified to handle it. This guy has no clue, I promise you.

And Joe Biden:

If bullshit were currency, Joe Biden would be a billionaire.

That last can be regarded, I think, as a definitive summing-up.
