I went back to our GOP Senate source to ask if the Democratic victory lap over the status of Obmacare in the Senate might be premature. He comments:
It feels to me it’s nothing short of journalistic malpractice that no one has talked to Jim Webb. He hasn’t said a word over the last two days, yet he wrote an op-ed earlier this week saying he was undecided and his spokeswoman told the Washington Post the same thing on Thursday. And no one has asked him anything.
One thing I’ll say in terms of what Republicans will do over the next few days is we’ll make it as politically uncomfortable as we can for Democrats to pass this monstrosity that every single survey shows Americans oppose. Obviously nothing’s over until all the votes are cast. All it takes is one Democrat to stand up, listen to the American people, and do the right thing.
Something that I do think is worth exploring more is the absolutely outrageous behavior of Harry Reid and Democrat leaders in playing “Let’s Make a Deal” with taxpayers’ money. There are carve-outs for Nebraska, Vermont, Florida, Louisiana, Montana, and a mystery state no one’s been able to figure out yet: “$100,000,000 for a ‘Health Care Facility’ ‘at a public research university in the United States that contains a state’s sole public academic medical and dental school'” (p. 328 of the manager’s amendment).
On the first point, one can only wonder what is happening. Are the media cooperating with a Democratic strategy to portray Obamacare as a done deal? On the last point, I wonder if we might have a local angle. In any event, Mary Landrieu and Ben Nelson make Democratic senators who haven’t secured a payoff for their state look like chumps.
