Speaking stupid all the time

Harry Reid is not a smart guy, but he combines his stupidity with a large dollop of phony humility that is really unattractive. It’s an unendearing combination. Rush Limbaugh’s description of him as Dingy Harry has it just about right.
Reid is the subject of national attention today for having said of Barack Obama in 2008 that he is “light skinned” and “with no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one.” I would like only to add that, after her performance at the Selma church during the campaign, the same could well have been said of Hillary Clinton.
Reid has of course issued the obligatory apology. He regrets using such a poor choice of words, and he supports Obama. If he had it to do over, what words would he have used? He doesn’t even apologize articulately.
Joe Biden publicly shared his own similar insight into Obama’s popularity during the campaign, and it didn’t keep him from getting selected to be Obama’s running mate. Biden omitted to note, however, that in addition to being clean, Obama was only Negro when he wanna be.
Harry Reid is not only stupid, he is an uninspiring leader. Democrats deserve him. They should be forced to live with him as their leader until Nevada voters deliver him the thumping at the polls that he so richly deserves.
UPDATE: Glenn Reynolds describes Reid as “following in Trent Lott’s footsteps” and has his usual good round-up, including, of course, Obama’s acceptance of Reid’s apology.
