The word from Lady al Qaeda

The trial of Lady al Qaeda (Aafia Siddiqui) has concluded in federal district court in New York with her conviction for trying to kill Americans while detained in Afghanistan in 2008. After the verdict was read she had a message for her supporters around the world. “This is a verdict coming from Israel, not America, and that is where the anger belongs. I can testify to this and I have proof.”
Her American lawyer testified to Siddiqui’s good faith after her courtroom outburst yesterday. Asked about Siddiqui’s comments regarding directing anger toward Israel, Siddiqui’s attorney commented: “I don’t think she’s saying she wants anybody to attack Israel.” Siddiqui’s attorney doesn’t sound absolutely certain about that, but it is nevertheless reassuring to have that on the record.
The linked New York Post article reports that Lady AQ was convicted of two counts of attempted murder, though the crime was not found by the jury to be premeditated. She was also found guilty of armed assault, using and carrying a firearm, and assault of US officers. The Post also reminds readers that Siddiqui had big plans for New York City. She was arrested two years ago carrying handwritten plans for a radioactive “dirty bomb” along with a list of New York landmarks.
Eric Holder will undoubtedly chalk Siddiqui’s conviction up as another credit in the column of the law enforcement approach to the effort formerly known as the war on terrorism. Others like me will wonder why she isn’t over at Gitmo with her brothers in arms.
