I guess that makes me an atheist

Bloomberg News reports that President Obama said he is “agnostic” about raising taxes on households making less than $250,000 as part of a broad effort to rein in the budget deficit. In an Oval Office interview on Tuesday, Obama said that a presidential commission on the budget needs to consider all options for reducing the deficit, including tax increases and cuts in spending on entitlement programs such as Social Security and Medicare: “The whole point of it is to make sure that all ideas are on the table. So what I want to do is to be completely agnostic, in terms of solutions.”
What’s wrong with that? During the campaign, Obama promised not to raise taxes on families making less than $250,000 a year. Glenn Reynolds has the video here. You’d think that might have some bearing on his belief in possible “solutions.”
The use of the word “agnostic” in this context is also weird. Who talks like this? It is both frou-frou and inapposite. The vast expansion of the federal government that Obama is working can’t rest entirely on the shoulders of “the rich.” We’re all going to have to pitch in! Or so he believes. When it comes to belief in taxes, Obama is about as “agnostic” as William Jennings Bryan was in the Bible.
