The Minneapolis Star Tribune has a lovely story about middle school students in Edina who gave their math teacher, Chris Hoffman, a flight engineer in the Minnesota Air National Guard, a surprise farewell party as he was about to leave for his fifth overseas deployment as a Guardsman.
We came of age during an anti-war, anti-military era that was marked by severe inter-generational conflict. For reasons I can’t explain, that inter-generational conflict has disappeared. It’s good to be reminded that, despite the perils and frustrations of our era, we are in many ways living in a better time.
