On the judicial nominations front

Politico is reporting that President Obama is poised to nominate Elana Kagan to the Supreme Court, probably on Monday. That’s certainly the sense I’ve been getting in the past few days. According to Mike Allen, “President Obama considers [Kagan] to be a persuasive, fearless advocate who would serve as an intellectual counterweight to Chief Justice Roberts and Justice Scalia, and could lure swing Justice Kennedy into some coalitions.”
To me, this sounds like the generic statement one would expect from the White House regarding anyone it decided to nominate this season — except for the unfortunate use of the word “lure.”
Meanwhile, the Senate Judiciary Committee’s vote on the nomination of Goodwin Liu to the Ninth Circuit has been postponed. Republican Senators exercised their prerogative to have consideration of the nomination delayed for a week so they have more time to review his responses to written questions. The vote now is expected to take place on or about May 13. Expect the committee Dems to vote favorably on Liu, and then for the real fight to begin.
