Et Tu, Larry?

Another South Carolina political consultant has claimed an improper relationship with Republican Nikki Haley, who is running in the GOP primary to succeed Mark Sanford. This guy, Larry Marchant, is modest–he alleges only a one-night stand.
What is it with South Carolina politics? Is this the Bible Belt or Peyton Place, or some weird combination of the two? I spent a lot of time in South Carolina on business a few years ago and found the citizenry to be quite normal, but the state’s political consultants apparently are a randy bunch; or claim to be, anyway. The more interesting question is whether voters are swayed by this sort of sensational but irrelevant claim. Are we, as a nation, becoming more prudish, at least when it comes to politics? I doubt it, but the South Carolina race might be a leading indicator.
