German coach Joachim Low has an interesting decision to make with respect to replacing suspended star Thomas Muller, the 20-year old who has scored prolifically at the World Cup. His most likely options are:
1. Piotr Trochowski, age 26, who scored four goals and had seven assists this season;
2. Toni Kroos,age 20, who scored 9 goals and had 12 assists; and
3. Marko Marin, age 21, who scored 4 goals and had 14 assists.
Kicker, the German football bible, thinks that Trochowski — the older and less attack-minded option — will get the nod. This would be consistent with my sense that this will be a more cagey, less open match than Germany’s last two.
UPDATE: Spain reportedly is opting for youth by starting Pedro (age 22) in place of Fernando Torres.
