A number of Somali immigrants in Minnesota have returned to Somalia to engage in activities leading to “man-caused disasters” there. A “variety of reasons” is involved.
We wouldn’t want to run afoul of Attorney General Holder’s proscription against ascribing a specific religious cause to cases like this one, or counterterrorism adviser John Brennan’s deep respect for the beauty of jihad by isolating any particular factor that might give the game away.
Both the Minneapolis office of the FBI and the office of the U.S. Attorney for the District of Minnesota have devoted substantial resources to investigating the mystery of the Somali disappearances. A grand jury has handed up several indictments. Andrew McCarthy devotes a chapter of The Grand Jihad to to the doings in Minnesota.
Yesterday Judge James Rosenbaum sentenced the first man out of more than a dozen charged in the counterterrorism investigation that, as the Star Tribune reports, “has spanned more than two years and several continents and focused a spotlight on the Twin Cities Somali community.”
The sentencing involved one Abdow Munye Abdow. Abdow is apparently a bit player in a drama involving the recruitment of 20 or more local Somalis seeking to assist the Somali terrorist group Al-Shabaab. Judge Rosenbaum sentenced Abdow to four months in prison and four months of home confinement for lying to federal agents investigating the case.
