An appeal to Yale alumni

A group of Yale alumni has put together an insurgent campaign on behalf of Michael Horowitz (’64L) for the next election of an Alumni Fellow to the Yale Corporation. The Yale alumni group has come together on the shared conviction that Horowitz’s election and service will enhance Yale’s financial viability and intellectual and political diversity. The campaign appears to have much in common with the campaigns that elected T.J. Rodgers, Peter Robinson, Todd Zywicki, and Stephen Smith to the board at Dartmouth. (I wrote about the Dartmouth campaigns in “Bucking the deans at Dartmouth.”)
A letter in support of Horowitz’s candidacy has been signed by alumni including Richard Brookhiser, William W. Chip, Andrew P. Clark, Seth J. Corey, Eleanor Gaetan, Todd Hartch, Grover J. Rees, Michael Rubin, Michael W. Steinberg, and Diana West. Their letter points out, among other notable facts, that Horowitz taught the first integrated classes at the University of Mississippi Law School, where he is a still-honored figure for his efforts to bring civil rights reform to life, and for his efforts to recruit African-American students while insisting on the maintenance of rigorous and color-blind academic standards. He was an equally distinguished General Counsel of the Office of Management and Budget during the Reagan administration. Interested Yale alumni can read a brief summary of Horowitz’s candidacy and view an account of his extraordinary achievements here. We are reliably informed that Michael Horowitz is an extraordinary man as well as a patriotic American with great credentials and with budgetary experience in education. If you are a Yale alumnus/alumna, please consider promptly lending him your support.
For Horowitz’s name to appear on the ballot as a write-in candidate for the 2011 election, he needs to gather 3,808 signatures by October 1. This is a tall order. Alumni willing to support Horowitz need to send a one-sentence e-mail with their name, Yale school, and class year to [email protected] with this simple declaration of support: “I support the Alumni Fellow petition candidacy of Michael Horowitz.”
