This day in baseball history — little big men

Game 5 of the 1960 World Series pitted Art Ditmar against Harvey Haddix. By starting Ditmar, who had pitched the opener, Yankee manager Casey Stengel was adhering to his four-man rotation. But Haddix’s start meant that “Vinegar Bend” Mizell, the Game 3 starter was being removed from the Pirate’s rotation. Bob Friend, who started the second game, would now pitch Game 6 (instead of Mizell) on five days rest, rather than Game 5 on three days.
Ditmar had been yanked in the first inning of Game 1. This time he lasted until the second inning, when doubles by Smokey Burgess and Bill Mazeroski, and an error by Gil McDougald led to three Pirate runs, and Ditmar’s exit.
The Pirates added a run in the fourth off of Luis Arroyo, on a single by Dick Groat and a double by Roberto Clemente. Haddix, meanwhile, gave up two runs in the first four innings, one of them coming on a home run by Roger Maris,
Haddix settled down in the middle three innings. But in the bottom of the seventh, after retiring Bobby Richardson, he gave up singles to Tony Kubek and pinch-hitter Hector Lopez.
For the second game in a row, Murtaugh called on his ace reliever Elroy Face in the seventh inning. And for the second game in a row, Face delivered no hit, no run relief. This time he required no defensive gems to pick up the save, his third of the Series. Pittsburgh added a run in the top of the ninth and coasted home with a 5-2 victory.
Haddix, who stood 5’9.5,” and Face who was 5’8,” had held the Yankees to five hits. This was the only game in which the Pirates outhit the Yanks.
The Pirates would now take a lead of three games to two back to Pittsburgh, with aces Bob Friend and, if necessary, Vern Law ready to close out the Yankees.
