In 2006, I attended a campaign event on behalf of Michele Bachmann at which President Bush spoke. Afterward, a story emerged: Bush, Bachmann and a few aides were in a car en route to the Lake Minnetonka mansion where the event took place, and someone had written a speech for Bush on one topic or another. On the way to the event, Bush reviewed the speech and said, This isn’t what I want to talk about. Literally or figuratively, Bush tore up the speech. The talk he delivered, to an audience of a few hundred Republican stalwarts in a tent, was impassioned and impromptu. It was about leadership, the war on terror, and the war in Iraq. It was a bravura performance, and I was reminded of it when I saw the former President on Sean Hannity’s show tonight. I disagreed with President Bush on a number of issues and gave him a B- when his second term ended, but the man served his country well and he still has the power to inspire. Unlike his limp successor.
