Call me old-fashioned

Rich Lowry reports that “rumors are flying that John McCain and Lindsey Graham have cut a deal with the White House to put off consideration of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell in the lame-duck, in exchange for their active support of New START.”
I’ll be delighted if DADT receives no more consideration in the lame duck session. But I don’t like the idea of horse-trading when it comes to approving important treaties. If McCain and Graham believe that New START is worthy of their active support, they should actively support it regardless of what the Dems do or don’t do with DADT. If they don’t, then they have no business actively supporting it under any circumstances.
As Lowry notes, however, the rumor in question is only that. Would President Obama really risk the ire of gay activists with this sort of a deal? Would John McCain really be this irresponsible about consideration of an important treaty?
