A Manchin or a Mousechin?

Joe Manchin is of course the newly elected Democratic Senator from West Virginia. He went missing yesterday when the Senate voted on the DREAM Act and don’t ask/don’t tell bill. Indeed, Manchin was the only Senate Democrat to miss Saturday’s votes on two of his party’s signature pieces of legislation. Where was Joe? (And what was Joe thinking?)
With some help from the local West Virginia press, the NRSC’s Brian Walsh announced that the mystery of Manchin’s whereabouts had been solved: “it turns out that Manchin had an explanation for why he wasn’t at work…wait for it…he had a Christmas Party that he just couldn’t miss.” Walsh didn’t let it go at that. He also offered “an updated Manchin campaign slogan – No Voting, No Labels — And No Skipping Christmas Parties, No Matter What.”
Along with ABC’s Matthew Jaffe, Walsh also observed that Manchin’s fellow Democratic Senator Ron Wyden showed up for the votes that Manchin missed. Wyden announced last week that he was diagnosed with prostate cancer and was expected to be absent in Washington this weekend before undergoing surgery on Monday. Unlike Manchin, however, Wyden attended the votes on Capitol Hill yesterday morning.
