Who Had the Worst 2010?

There are several possible answers to that question. One, certainly, is Barack Obama, as the Associated Press acknowledges: “Obama’s terrible, horrible, no good, very bad year.”

Barack Obama’s terrible, horrible, no good, very bad year got off to a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad start. There he was, on New Year’s Day, on vacation with his family in Hawaii, stuck on a secure phone with counterterrorism officials, trying to figure out what screw-ups had allowed a would-be terrorist to board a Christmas Day flight with explosives in his underwear.
Things only got worse for Obama when he returned to Washington in between a pair of epic winter storms.
From the start, 2010 delivered a string of setbacks that built up to an electoral shellacking come November, to use the president’s own word.

Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid are among others who come to mind as contenders for the title of “worst 2010,” along with various Senators and Congressmen who lost their seats.
But that’s not how Chris Cillizza of the Washington Post sees it. Cillizza poses the question, “Who had the worst year in Washington in 2010?” His answer? Michael Steele.
Now, we have been critical of Steele, as have many others. But as the chairman of a party that scored the biggest mid-term gains in seven decades, it is hard to see how he can possibly have had the worst 2010 of anyone in Washington. Moreover, given the events of the past year, doesn’t it seem obvious that the winner of that award has to be a Democrat?
It’s a small thing, of course. But to me, it is one more reminder that the Democrats’ cheering section in the DC press is not necessarily doing the party any favors. No wonder the Dems are so often out of touch with what mainstream Americans are thinking.
