After the vote on collective bargaining in the Wisconsin Senate, armed guards led Republican Senators through a tunnel, out of the Capitol and onto a waiting bus, which reportedly was commandeered for the purpose on an emergency basis. A howling mob of union members threatened the Republicans, shouted obscenities and pounded on the bus. It is impossible to say what violence would have happened if the Senators had not been protected by a throng of armed guards. Legal Insurrection has more.
These scenes of mob rule are shocking. I think a lot of people are learning things about unions they had never realized. My own conviction that all public sector unions should be banned has been strengthened by witnessing these repeated efforts to frustrate the democratic process through threats and intimidation. Beyond that, these shocking scenes may well fuel a consensus that there is no place for unions of any kind in American life.
