Aces revisited

I wrote here last week about country star Suzy Bogguss’s show at the Dakota Jazz Club and Restaurant in downtown Minneapolis. Playing in an intimate venue before a warm crowd, Bogguss raved about the room and the restaurant, declaring that she was going to beg the Dakota to have her back.

Suzy played just about every song a fan could reasonably have wanted to hear as well as a few we wouldn’t have known to ask for, such as one from her forthcoming album of American folk songs. I thought it was a completely winning show. Indeed, a couple things about the show have really stuck in my mind.

I sat in front of the stage about ten feet from Bogguss. Watching her up close, I couldn’t get over the fact that she smiled from the moment she hit the stage to the time she wrapped it up nearly two hours later. And she seemed just about as happy talking with fans who lined up to purchase her recordings and pose with her for pictures after the show as she did performing for us.

One other thing about the show: it was unplugged. Bogguss and lead guitarist Pat Bergeson played acoustic guitars while Charlie Chadwick played acoustic stand-up bass. The acoustic accompaniment set the purity of Bogguss’s voice in beautiful relief.

I’m revisiting the show because I was delighted to see that Bogguss’s fan site has posted a link to my notes on the show along with a set of photographs. (Bogguss’s official site is here.) In the photo below, I can even be detected, in a “where’s Waldo” kind of way, gazing admiringly at the star.
