In treatment

Rep. Anthony Weiner says he is taking a leave from Congress and entering treatment. Treatment for what? I think he needs treatment for exhibitionism, but he hasn’t mentioned that, although it may be subsumed within the category of treatment to become a better husband. Having previously asked for forgiveness from Bill Clinton, who officiated at his wedding to Huma Abedin, he can now ask Clinton for counseling, as Clinton sought counseling from Jesse Jackson. Or perhaps Weiner himself can call on Jackson. It worked for Clinton. There’s no Democratic malady Jackson can’t treat.
Weiner’s biggest problem right now is the demand among prominent congressional Democrats that he resign his office. That is the problem that Weiner hopes to be treating. It lacks the therapeutic edge of treatment for exhibitionism, but it might be more effective than whatever they have for that.
Weiner has staked his approach to maintaining his office on attention deficit disorder. He hopes that temporarily removing himself from the limelight will prompt public attention to move on. It’s the last refuge of a scoundrel.
