Terrorist Attacks In Oslo

Earlier today, multiple terrorist attacks took place in Oslo. A bomb went off in the central city, near the government building that houses the Prime Minister’s office. At least two people were killed, and others injured. At around the same time, a gunman dressed as a policeman opened fire on a youth camp outside the city where Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg was scheduled to speak. Apparently at least five people were injured in that attack. Finally, a “suspicious package” was received by television station TV2, which was then sealed off by police.

The perpetrators of these attacks have not yet been identified, but they likely were Muslim terrorists. News reports indicate that earlier this week, a prosecutor filed terror-related charges against an Iraqi-born cleric who threatened to kill Norwegian politicians. It is not yet known whether those charges are related to today’s attacks.

The video below shows the aftermath of the bombing:

UPDATE: Current reports indicate that at least nine people were killed in the shootings at the island youth camp, but this information appears less than certain. This is Utoya island, where the shootings took place:

FURTHER UPDATE: The death toll on the island is now at least 80, and the perpetrator of both attacks is believed to be a single individual, Anders Behring Breivik. Officials say that “It seems it’s not Islamic-terror related,” but so far I have seen no information about the perpetrator’s background or possible motivations–assuming there is any motivation other than sheer insanity.

UPDATE: More here and here.
