We’re Guilty, Damn It!

Of all the conspiracy theories of modern times, trutherism must be the silliest. The idea that the U.S. government was behind the September 11 attacks, or acquiesced in them, is absurd on its face; and yet, a great many Democrats believe just that–or tell pollsters they do, anyway.

Apart from Democrats, most truthers are bitterly anti-American, certifiably insane, or both. One prominent truther is Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Last week at the United Nations, he repeated the claim that the Bush administration was responsible for the terror attacks, to the outrage of al Qaeda. It is very weird for al Qaeda to be the voice of sanity, but that is happening here:

[T]he Yemen-based compiler of [al Qaeda’s] Inspire magazine wrote that President Ahmadinejad had appeared “ridiculous” when he questioned the origins of the attack that killed almost 3,000 people.

“The Iranian government has professed on the tongue of its president Ahmadinejad that it does not believe that al Qaeda was behind 9/11 but rather, the US government,” it said. “So we may ask the question: why would Iran ascribe to such a ridiculous belief that stands in the face of all logic and evidence?”

Good question! The facts surrounding the September 11 attacks are known about as thoroughly as any human event can be, through the testimony of Khalid Sheikh Muhammad and many others. Are the millions of Democrats who say they are truthers embarrassed to be in the company of anti-American nutters like Ahmadinejad? So far, they have shown no sign of it.
