The Smithsonian speaks

In the comments to “Occupy the Smithsonian,” some anonymous Smithsonian spokesman corrects the reportage of the Washington Post’s ArtsPost item by Maura Judkis on which our post was based:

It is a misunderstanding that the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History is planning an exhibition. Please note that there are no plans for an exhibition of the OWS signs.

Staff of the museum has collected a only a few pieces so far, just as curators have collected from the Obama/McCain Presidential campaigns, the Tea Party rally in March 2010, Glenn Beck’s “Restoring Honor” rally, Jon Stewart’s “Rally to Restore Sanity“ and most recently from the American Conservative Union’s CPAC in February and from the protests at the Wisconsin state capitol in March.

This is part of the museum’s long tradition of documenting how all Americans participate in the life of the nation. Contrary to recent news items that were published without input from the museum, please note that there are no plans for an exhibition of the OWS signs and the museum is not soliciting suggestions from the public.

Now if we could just get Maura Judkis to leave a comment…
