There are signs that the Newt Gingrich bubble may be bursting. Let’s hope so: the walk down the memory lane of the 1980s and 1990s, not to mention Newt’s current transgressions, is getting hard to take. Let’s just survey today’s news:
* R. Emmett Tyrell, who was there and remembers, labeled Gingrich “conservatism’s Bill Clinton, but without the charm.”
* Marco Rubio denounced a Gingrich Spanish-language ad in Florida that called Mitt Romney “anti-immigrant.” Gingrich pulled the ad.
* In National Review, Elliott Abrams, one of the heroes of the Reagan administration, reminded us that in the 1980s, Gingrich–who now takes credit for pretty much all of the achievements of the Reagan administration–said, on the House floor: “[Reagan] has failed, is failing, and without a dramatic change in strategy will continue to fail…. President Reagan is clearly failing.” Reagan’s administration, Gingrich railed, was “pathetically incompetent,” and “the burden of this failure frankly must be placed first on President Reagan.”
* In Florida, Gingrich pledged, if elected, to build an American colony on the moon.
* So it is little wonder that, as Scott reported earlier this evening, the Democrats are spending millions to try to secure the GOP nomination for Newt.
The Democrats may be terrible at governing, but give the Devil his due–they know a lousy Republican candidate when they see one.
