Leave it to Ann

I think of CPAC as the event in which endless speakers (that’s the bad part) serve up red meat to a conservative audience (that’s the good part). But this year, there seemed to be a ban on red meat conservatism as it pertains to the immigration issue. And with various Republican legislators lining up behind, or softening their opposition to, amnesty/a path to citizenship for illegal aliens, the vegetarianism was especially inappropriate.

But today, Ann Coulter charged into the breach. “If amnesty goes through,” she declared (exaggerating only slightly), “America becomes California and no Republican will ever win another national election.”

Coulter also asked a question that, minus the snark, has been on my mind:

I can see why Democrats would want amnesty, but why on earth are Marco Rubio and these endless Bushes supporting it? Even Shemp and Zippo Bush are supporting amnesty for illegals.

She then answered her own question:

Republicans are grasping at these suicidal policies because they’re panicked, they’re demoralized after the last election. Stop panicking, Republicans!

Coulter’s answer is correct as to many Republicans. For others, it may be too charitable.

How did the CPAC audience greet Coulter’s timely rant? With cheers.

That cheering stands in marked contrast to the “smattering of polite applause” with which the audience responded to the pro-amnesty speakers that CPAC served up on its panel discussion of immigration. Let’s hope that House Republicans were paying attention.
