Leonard Garment died over the weekend at the age of 89. Garment was a top adviser to Richard Nixon and, it seemed to me, a force for decency within the Nixon administration.
Garment was also a high-profile lawyer before and after his service in the Nixon administration. He met Nixon when the former vice president joined the Wall Street firm where Garment was a partner.
Garment’s autobiography, Crazy Rhythm: From Brooklyn and Jazz to Nixon’s White House, Watergate, and Beyond, is one of the best books of its genre that I have ever read. It provides genuine insight into Nixon, though Garment confesses not fully to have understood his friend.
