Team of nitwits

Over the weekend the White House released the official photo below with this caption: “President Barack Obama meets in the Situation Room with his national security advisors to discuss strategy in Syria, Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013.” It runs on the editorial pages of today’s Wall Street Journal along with Eliot Cohen’s column (behind the Journal’s jealously guarded paywall) supporting congressional authorization of military action against Syria.

A friend writes:

I looked at the picture in the WSJ today of the “war cabinet” meeting on Syria and I confess that my heart just sank.  Obama, Biden, John Kerry, Eric Holder, Check Hagel, Susan Rice–ugh, I just can’t believe that we have such small people making such big decisions.  I don’t know what the right answer is here, but I’ve never felt so little confidence in the intellectual, moral, and prudential capabilities of the American officials in making this sort of decision.  Totally involuntary too–just completely deflated.
