The lane-closure scandal, some perspective please

Piers Morgan thinks that the bridge scandal perpetrated by Chris Christie’s aides ranks “pretty well up there” with Watergate. As Andrew Johnson notes, even the lefty members of his panel realized that the comparison is ridiculous.

But then, Morgan is the same clown who pronounced last spring that Arsenal should fire its great manager Arsene Wenger. The Gunners promptly went on a phenomenal run to close out the season. This season, they sit at the top of the Premier League and have advanced, once again, to the Final 16 in the European Champions League.

The bridge lane closing is a serious matter and if Christie was responsible for it, or has lied about what he knew, then in my opinion, he is unfit for that reason to be President of the United States. But there is no evidence that suggests Christie was responsible for the closings or has lied about any aspect of the matter.

Let’s not lose all sense of sense of proportion. The recent scandal most analogous to “Watergate” isn’t the lane closing; it’s the mistreatment by the Obama administration’s IRS of the Tea Party and other opponents of Obama’s policies. Indeed, such misconduct was part of the Nixon-era abuses that these days are lumped together as Watergate.

And let’s not forget the many other scandals that President Obama and his heir apparent, Hillary Clinton. A friend reminds me of some, though not all, of them:

Barack Obama spent 20 years intermittently attending a church led by a racist anti-American preacher. He also socialized with radical left-wing domestic terrorists. He then gave one speech and the mainstream media hailed him as akin to the Second Coming.

Barack Obama has never explained what he was doing when terrorists attacked Benghazi nor has he explained why he peddled a completely false narrative about a Youtube video for so long. No one even asks him about these issues any more.

Millions of Americans are losing health insurance due to the ongoing Obamacare fiasco, and millions of other Americans are watching their health insurance costs sky rocket. The administration is focused on threatening to destroy the Little Sisters of the Poor and religious groups that do not want to pay for contraception, abortion, and sterilization.

Hillary Clinton has spent her entire adult life on the edge of one scandal after another and has personally played a role in a dubious cattle futures scheme, bank fraud, missing records that were under subpoena by a grand jury, and the Benghazi matter, among others.

This week, former Secretary of Defense Gates revealed that both Mrs. Clinton and Mr. Obama openly discussed the reason they opposed President Bush’s surge in Iraq: they were both hoping to appease leftists in the Iowa presidential caucuses and figured that opposing the surge was in their political interests.

No one died, apparently, as a result of “Bridge Gate.” Many American soldiers died as a result of Obama’s decision to order a surge in Afghanistan that he did not believe in and that he undermined from the beginning by announcing his plan for withdrawal. And America would have lost the war in Iraq without President Bush’s surge — the one Obama and Clinton cynically opposed for personal political reasons.

Chris Christie has a ways to go before he catches up with Obama and Clinton — never mind Nixon — is the scandal department.
