The Times corrects

The New York Times runs another classic correction, this one at the end of its article on the troubles of Chris Christie:

An earlier version of this article misidentified the state where Andrew M. Cuomo is governor. It is New York, not New Jersey.

Unlike other corrections we have noted here, the error underlying this one reflects no ignorance of basic geography or arithmetic or history. It reflects the editors’ difficulty concentrating on the deadening copy staring them in the face. Their minds wandered!

I can sympathize. As I read the Times, my mind wanders too, and as I read Times editorials, I can feel it killing brain cells. That doesn’t help either.

I’m not sure about the problem underlying the correction below, but it might well be related to the same syndrome:

An earlier version of this article misidentified the reporter. Marc Santora wrote that version of the article, not Kate Zernike. Both wrote later versions.

Now did Santora get the governor of New York wrong, or Zernike, or both of them? Or Michael Barbaro, who “contributed reporting”? Inquiring minds want to know.
