During my recently concluded year as an inmate at the University of Colorado at Boulder I took note of Senator Mark Udall, now running a close race for re-election against a spirited challenge from Rep. Cory Gardner. Udall, who, like the other senator named Mark struggling for re-election, is trading mostly on a family name, struck me as an especially mediocre version of the species Liberalis Americanus, so much so that you’d think he might even start reviewing foreign policy books for the Washington Post or something.
Udall didn’t have an especially strong outing in a recent TV debate with Gardner, and over on NRO the sainted wunderkind Elaina Johnson highlights Udall’s worst gaffe of the debate:
“I can tell you,” Udall said, “Steve Sotloff and James Foley would tell us, don’t be impulsive. Horrible and barbarous as those executions were, don’t be impulsive, come up with a plan to knock ISIL back.”
You can hear some boos from the audience in the video attached to Eliana’s dispatch. This afternoon Udall is backtracking as fast as he can, issuing an apology. The man’s a dullard, I tell you.
And then there’s this Udall blunder that Gardner jumped all over:
